Jennifer Johnson is an African American artist from Chicago, IL. She uses illustration and printmaking as part of her toolbox to bring her ideas to life.
Because of her experience working in the conservation field, Jennifer draws upon nature for many of her ideas. Additionally, Jennifer has been inspired by comics and animation, particularly works from Japan. She often uses science fiction and fantasy to examine personal struggles, African American history, and humanity’s connection to the environment.
Jennifer graduated from Columbia College Chicago in 2012, where she majored in Illustration. For four years, Jennifer has been a fellow, and now community coordinator for Wild Indigo Nature Explorations. Wild Indigo is a community program through the Audubon Great Lakes that emphasizes connecting underserved communities with their natural spaces. Jennifer plans and facilitates community events that include outdoor recreation, environmental stewardship, and making art.
